Project finance modelling from Penelope Lynch
The following pre-structured agendas can be delivered as in-house courses, and may be offered from time-to-time as public courses. If no public presentation is currently listed for a course you would like to attend, please let us know, and we will advise you whether a public presentation is being planned, and provide details of in-house options if not. If none of the suggested courses exactly meet your needs, please feel free to contact Penny and see whether something new can be structured specifically for your requirements.
The courses are essentially of three kinds; Core modelling courses which cover practical modelling methods and principles, adapted for various levels of experience; Specialised modules which cover advanced practical modelling solutions to very specific modelling issues; Non-modeller courses which look at aspects of model operation and results, but not the technical aspects of model writing
Because the modelling structures taught in the core courses form the basis for the modelling solutions addressed in the specialised modules, attendance for some modules is restricted to delegates who have attended a core course at some time, or studied the workbook.
In addition to the short courses listed below, a new, in depth program is available, with optional assessment for the Certificate in Project Finance Modelling. For further details please see www.CPFMEC.com
Core Course
Three day course covering the theory and practice of model building. This course forms the basis from which all the other practical modelling courses build. It looks at the purpose and uses of the model, and the consequent need for flexibility and ease of use. Each model section is discussed and illustrated with the course models, as are topics on circularity, currency treatments, management of sensitivities, systems for checking the model and more. During the course, multiple practical sessions build confidence, familiarity and understanding, with close support and individual attention as needed.
A full illustrative agenda is available for this course.
pre-core modelling Course
Preparatory course covering the Excel skills assumed as a prerequisite for the core modelling courses

Core Course
The advanced course covers all the theory and methods included in the basic three day core course, since these form the basis from which more advanced problems can be addressed. Aimed at more experienced modellers, however, less time is allocated to some basic sections, some are covered in greater depth, and some entirely new topics are included.
A full illustrative agenda is available for this course.
Next scheduled dates are London, April 28th to 30th, 2010. Fees per delegate are £2,960 + VAT, (less £200 early payment discount for payments recieved before April 9th).

Specialist module - previous attendance of core course recommended
This course offers an intensive program of theory and practice looking at methods of optimisation appropriate to PPP and PFI projects.
The course considers the general theory and purpose behind optimisation, looking at targets and constraints. Using illustrative models conforming to the principals detailed in the core courses and the workbook, the delegates are guided through practical sessions in which they produce an optimising model for each of the following situations, after a detailed explanation of the theory behind each case;

Next scheduled dates are London, June 16th to 18th, 2010. Fees per delegate are £3,180 + VAT, (less £300 early booking discount for bookings before May 1st).

Core Course
Three day course covering the theory and practice of model building, with specific emphasis on modelling for cash flow-based valuations. This course covers the basic structure and philosphy of cash-flow modelling, incorporating the key elements from the three day project finance modelling courses. Each model section is discussed and illustrated with the course models, as are topics on circularity, calculation of a purchase price which gives a specified target IRR, management of sensitivities, producing tables of results, systems for checking the model and more. During the course, multiple practical sessions build confidence, familiarity and understanding, with close support and individual attention as needed.
non-modeller Course
One day course giving a modeller's perspective on the relationship between the project finance model and the loan agreement. Looking at each of the key elements of the loan considering what the model is trying to achieve, what are the fundamental and simplifying assumptions behind the outputs and what implications does this have for the way things are handled in the loan agreement.
The structured agenda for this course is expected to provide a framework for discussion, and for specific questions drawing on the delegates' own expeiences to date.
non-modeller Course
One day course giving a modeller's perspective on the relationship between the financial model and the project agreements for PFI/PPP deals. Considering issues relating to indexation, timing in the model vs timing in real life, flows to and from project accounts, the targets and constraints of sculpting and optimising in the model, and what all these mean for the documentation.
The structured agenda for this course is expected to provide a framework for discussion, and for specific questions drawing on the delegates' own expeiences to date.
non-modeller/model user Course
For organisations receiving the bidder's models for PPP/PFI deals, this short course follows the process from opening the model, to finding and understanding key results and assumptions. The theory behind issues such as indexation, cover factors, IRR and optimisation are explored, and their possible treatment in the models discussed and illustrated.
This course can readily be adapted to match the specific knowledge levels and experience for the proposed delegate group, and even within a tailored agenda, there should still be scope to respond flexibly to the questions and interests of the group throughout the presentation.
non-modeller Course
Explains the objectives and constraints behind optimisation and sculpting in PFI models
non-modeller Course
Explanation of what project finance models do and what the outputs mean
