Training & Mentoring - which is the right course for you?

The following is intended to give some guidance as to which pre-structured agendas are most likely to meet your needs. If you don't seem to fit any of the suggested user types, or if none of the suggested courses exactly meet your needs, please feel free to contact Penny and see whether something new can be structured specifically for your requirements.

The benefits of proper training extend beyond the improved performance of individuals. Adoption of a common set of standards for model design, layout and good-practice allows safer and more efficient modelling at an organisation level, with consistent and recognisable structures both within spreadsheets and in printed results.

Novice modellers

For novice modellers, the basic three day course gives an excellent introduction to good principals of model layout, content and modelling methods. These courses include a high practical content, building confidence and familiarity with the mechanics of using Excel to create a specialised project finance model, as well as reinforcing the theoretical principals explained and illustrated during the course.

Specialist modules and follow on courses can then be considered to match the developing needs of individual modellers.

For a more thorough grounding in the principals and methods of financial modelling for project finance, delegates based in London may find the new eight week evening course in Project Finance Modelling an ideal way of bringing their modelling skills and knowledge to an exemplary standard. The course has an associated Certificate in Project Finance Modelling, a new qualification intended to become a bench-mark in the field.

For novice modellers not confident in their Excel skills, there is also a preparaory course targetting the relevant Excel skills assumed for the basic modelling course.

Experienced Modellers

For experienced modellers a more ambitious version of the core three day course gives an introduction to the basic model structures and methods which underpin all the other practical modelling courses, and provide a consistent and time-tested approach to issues such as fully flexible control of timings, avoidance of circular code, use (and abuse) of macros, automation of sensitivty cases etc.

Building from the core course (or from study of the workbook), a range of specialist modules are also available, offering focussed insights into very specific modelling issues.

For experienced modellers wishing to consolidate and extend their knowledge, the new eight week evening course in financial modelling for project finance offers a thorough exploration of the subject, and is associated with an assessed Certificate in Project Finance Modelling, intended to formalise achievement in this field.

Non-modelling model users

Individuals needing to use models written by someone else, who just need, for example, to be able to run sensitivities or update inputs in the model would probably be best served by one-to-one mentoring or by an in-house presentation specifically tailored to the needs of the team, as the level of background and technical information required will be very dependent on the details of their work.
